Alumni Room Open House On Oct. 26; Dinner Date Looks Like June 27

Two bits of news from the old home town:

-- On Sunday, Oct. 26, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be an open house at the Alumni Association's room in the school building.

The Salamanca Press writes that "the alumni room is located in the former Little Valley Central School, 207 Rock City St., in a room on the Thompson Avenue side of the building. ...
Included in the collection to be displayed are old yearbooks, commencement programs, a set of lockers recovered from the basement of the school, sports uniforms, National Honor Society banners and tardy slips. 'We actually also have the curtains that used to hang over the top of the auditorium,' added {Alumni President Kevin Andrew}. 'Last year we found our old track records that were all handwritten on a board. ... There’s a lot that people that went to school here that will remember. It’s not anything of great value necessarily, but valuable to people that went here. Come on in and see what we have.' "

-- Kevin tells us that it looks like the 2015 dinner will be on June 27, in the Corporate Building at the Fair Grounds. Jeri Parkhurst Harris, class of '59, will speak. Kevin says the evening's theme will be "the creative arts."

From The Minutes: 2014 Dinner Highlights

Nell Fellows, Class of '76, has sent along her minutes from this year's dinner. Many thanks, Nell!

The 115th annual LVCS Alumni Dinner and Reunion was held Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Corporate building on the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds with 165 members and guests in attendance.

President Kevin Andrew greeted the group before leading the pledge of allegiance, invocation and moment of silence in memory of deceased members.

A family-style dinner was catered by Top of the Line catering.

The minutes from the previous year's meeting were compiled by Secretary Nancy Paschen Shinners and read by Nell Fellows.  The treasurer's report was listed in the program.  A list of memorials was provided.

Kevin thanked the board of directors for their help, along with the alumni who continue to support the organization through their dues and donations to the general fund.

Commemorative ornaments for the honored class of 1964 were made by China Doll Ceramics of Cattaraugus.  All members and guests received orange & black Panthers drink koozies as a souvenir.

Kevin reported that the LVCS Facebook page, moderated by Todd Fuller, currently has 490 followers.  Todd will give a bottle of wine to the 500th follower.

LV resident and C/LV senior Gabe Grey was awarded the $200 sportsmanship award at C/LV graduation.

Alumni military members were recognized with a round of applause.  Alumnus Art Asquith was thanked for writing the words to our school song so many years ago.

Under new business, it was proposed that our officers serve 2 year terms, rather than the current one year term.  Gail Ellis Minnekine made the motion, with the second from Martin Taft.  After discussion, the motion carried.

Gail Ellis Minnekine moved, with the second from Bob Milks, to re-elect our current president, secretary and treasurer to serve 2014-2016.  The motion was unanimously carried.

Our guest speaker was Carol Gloff from the class of 1970.
Carol shared some favorite childhood school memories, along with the pros and cons of being "Harold's daughter" in school.   Pro? .... access to all the rooms in the building that most have never seen.    Con?  ... having your dad see you standing in the hall where you'd been sent for talking too much.

Carol also shared stories of teachers who influenced her the most.  Our small school gave everyone the chance to try many different sports and club opportunities we may not have had in a bigger school.  Carol urged us all to "remember where you come from, no matter where you go."

Linda Bryant Milks read the roll call of members present.  Our most senior alumnus, Wilma Easton Bridges, was awarded a gift certificate.

Kevin introduced the members of the honored 50-year class of 1964.  Class representative Bill Steinbroner shared stories from high school days.  He also took us all up and down the streets on a "mind's eye" tour of what Little Valley looked like in 1964 ... from the Cattaraugus County Cutlery to Bina's restaurant ... from Timme Hardware to Eldridge's meat market, to name just a few.

Kevin reviewed Ed Memmott's report on the Memmott-Langhans award.  Three seniors received $1000 awards - Evan Stern, Rachel Lange and Mackenzie Grube.  Kaylee Eaton received a $500 award.

The evening adjourned at 9:15 p.m., following the singing of the alma mater and our school song.

2014 Dinner Is Set For June 28; Invitations Are Out

The 115th Alumni Dinner is set for June 28 at the Corporate Building on the Fair Grounds. The keynote speaker will be Class of '70's Carol Gloff. She's a distinguished grad (president of UB's Alumni Assn., chair of the board of selectmen in Natick, Mass., and an expert in pharmaceutical and biotechnology product development). And, of course, she is the daughter of the much loved and much missed Harold.

Invitations have been mailed. In case you didn't get one, digital copies have been posted on the Little Valley Central Facebook page. Just click here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/26363367184/permalink/10151856732437185/

Note: there will be a lack of Memmotts this year -- but I hope you agree it's for a good reason. Erin Memmott, this blogger's daughter and the youngest grandchild of Arthur and Sara, is getting married that evening. I think her grandfather would have liked the confluence of happy events -- a wedding and graduation weekend in LV.

Can You Help Find Some Alums?

Spring is finally here -- at least according to the calendar.

That means the Alumni board will soon be trying to get in touch with everyone.

President Andrew tells us that there are quite a few folks that the association doesn't know how to reach. We've uploaded a list of names. Click here to see it:

Just hit 'download' after the page loads and the documents should open.

If you know anyone on the list, or know someone who might be of help, reach out to them and see if they would like to be contacted by the association. Ask them to send their contact information to:
